Threads of Tradition

Thota Vaikuntam presents his latest publication, Threads of Tradition, a groundbreaking artistic endeavour that translates his iconic paintings into exquisite three-dimensional zardozi embroidery. This extraordinary body of work represents a historic convergence between Vaikuntam’s celebrated vision of rural Telangana and the centuries-old mastery of India’s most revered zardozi craftsmen.

For Threads of Tradition, Vaikuntam personally guided the transformation of his painted compositions into tactile masterpieces that honour both his artistic language and India’s textile heritage. Each embroidered work begins with Vaikuntam’s original vision, carefully translated into silk thread, precious and semi-precious gemstones, and ornate metal-thread work on velvet.

The artworks in Threads of Tradition have been created under Vaikuntam’s meticulous direction by the esteemed Shams family of Agra, sixteenth-generation masters who have practiced the regal art of zardozi for over three centuries. Descended from Ustad Ahmed Lahori, the principal architect of the Taj Mahal, the Shams lineage represents an unbroken tradition of craftsmanship that evolved from Mughal architecture to textile artistry.

Threads of Tradition represents more than artistic collaboration, it is a vital act of cultural preservation. In an era of rapid modernization, this project ensures that the ancient techniques of three-dimensional zardozi remain alive, evolving, and relevant through reinterpretation within a contemporary artistic context. The publication serves as both celebration and documentation of art, craft, heritage, and the generational transmission of knowledge that defines India’s living cultural traditions.
