Modern Freskos is a comprehensive monograph dedicated to the work of Berlin-based artist Paul Kuntze. This publication marks a significant moment in our commitment to fostering a dialogue between artistic heritage and contemporary thought, coinciding with the artist’s debut solo exhibition in India.
Paul Kuntze’s practice occupies a striking threshold between eras. Drawing inspiration from the celestial drama of Baroque ceiling paintings, he reimagines the “fresco” not as a relic of the past, but as a living, fluid medium. Through a synthesis of soft, atmospheric gradients and thick, palette-knife sculptural forms, Kuntze translates the grandeur of religious history into the emotive language of modern abstraction. His canvases are palimpsests of time, where spray paint meets the structural rigour of the Old Masters, creating a space where the divine collides with the raw.
