Ode To The Monumental
Murals form the earliest foundations of Indian painting, depicting the formation and development of religion, cultural practices, and a way of life on the subcontinent. These artistic records, some dating back to the 2nd century BC, provide an insight into the cultural and aesthetic practices that have influenced the artists of today – from 20th century Indian modernism to the current contemporary visual dialogue.
Ode to the Monumental began with the idea of artists expanding into new territory and creating on a scale that, while different from the norm, harks back to the very origins of Indian painting. It was an opportunity to redefine their spheres of influence and the scope of their vision, with works that resonate and evoke emotions that parallel those experienced when standing in front of a beautiful monument.
It is indeed a privilege to be able to offer a selection of twenty-four artworks in this format from artists of such accomplishment – some who are senior icons of Indian art, and others who have established reputations in younger careers. It is not surprising that it has taken four years for this collection to come together - the works in themselves illustrate the remarkable journey in the creative process for each of the artists involved.
