Himmat Shah: Innocence and Creativity

Himmat has always allowed his innocence to lead the way in the creation of his artworks. He often says that the creator did not know much and so his innocence shows in the world around us. He continues to find his sculpture even at the age of 92 and reminds us in his casual arrogance of his eternal search claiming that he will not breathe his last till he does.

This current exhibition of bronzes all cast at Bronze Age Foundry in London, where Himmat has worked and cast his works for over twenty years, is a selection of sculptures that have been important forms that he has created during his career and has come back to them again in a renewed scale and patina. The Tirthankar and Man from Moon are two prime examples which have always had an important place in his journey. In this exhibition, Himmat has also explored stone for larger artworks and solid gold casts for his miniature sculptures.

Although Himmat’s sculptures are created with hard and long-lasting materials, the essence lies in their subtlety. Himmat’s work has always been held in high esteem and Himmat remains one of, if not the foremost modern Indian sculptor of our times.
