The
City
Lively and elegant, Madrid contrasts the traditional
with the modern, the old with the new. This great
metropolis contains many cities. There is the cultured
city of museums (including the world-renowned Prado),
concerts and theaters and the traditional city of
bullfights and popular festivals. There is also the
gastronomic Madrid with its typical restaurants and the
historical Madrid with its monuments, churches, convents
and palaces, its architecture of the Renaissance,
Baroque and Hapsburg periods. Then there is the modem
Madrid, seat of the national government, with its
multinational enterprises, convention halls and
ministries. Madrid is a gateway to all of Spain and its
rich cultural heritage: Segovia, once a Roman city, with
its ancient aqueduct; Salamanca, whose university dates
back 700 years; Avila, boasting the oldest and most
complete Spanish medieval city walls; and Toledo,
capital in Gothic times, a city of architectural
treasures.

The
Campus
The Madrid campus is located in the Colomina Building in
ArguOles, one of the most attractive districts in central
Madrid. It is within walking distance of the main shopping
area, cinemas and theaters, and only minutes away by
subway or bus from the Old City and the Universidad
Complutense de Madrid. Aside from administrative offices
and classrooms, the Campus facilities contain a student
lounge, a snack bar, two computer rooms, a library, a
career counseling office, study rooms and a reading room.
Students also have access to other libraries, both Spanish
and English, including the Biblioteca Nacional. With the
assistance of the SIU staff, students are housed in
private rooms or with families. Students may also seek
their own lodgings or apartments in the city. |
