SIU's
graduate program in international relations and
diplomacy, offered at its
London and Paris
campuses, is a professional program which prepares
students for careers in foreign affairs, with their
own governments or with international organizations,
in journalism or in business. It combines a
traditional theoretical approach to the study of
international relations with practical training in the
mechanics of contemporary diplomacy and international
negotiations. Central to the program is a two-semester
laboratory course in diplomacy which introduces
students to the structure and functions of diplomatic
missions and trains them in the skills of diplomacy.
Also, by completing three additional graduate courses
in European studies or in international business,
students may specialize their international relations
and diplomacy degree in either field.
The MA program (without specialization) may be
completed in two semesters of full-time study at
either the London or Paris campus. Students may
transfer from one campus to the other, affording them
maximum access to the diplomatic agencies in both
capitals. To specialize their degree in European
studies or in international business, students must
complete, in addition to the thirty-six credits
normally required, nine semester credits in either
three international business courses or in three
European-focused international relations and diplomacy
courses. With specialization, the MA in International
Relations and Diplomacy can be complete in two
semesters and one summer session (one year).
Admission Requirements:
The Bachelor of Arts degree or its equivalent, with a
major concentration in either political science or
international relations and diplomacy, and with one
year of undergraduate economics and at least the
intermediate level of one foreign language. Students
lacking economics, international relations or
political science courses will be required to complete
these courses at SIU. Students who do not have the
requisite proficiency in a foreign language must
complete this requirement before graduation from the
MA program. Note: students lacking courses in
economics, politics, international relations, or
foreign language will generally need more than two
semesters to complete all graduation requirements.
Graduation Requirements: In addition to the
graduation requirements for all graduate students
candidates for the Master of Arts in International
Relations and Diplomacy must complete the following:
-
Thirty-six semester credits, including the required
core courses listed below. To complete the remaining 9
credits, students may take elective courses at the 500
level as listed. Students completing a thesis may
register for IR 599 Thesis and receive three credits
as part of the 36 credit requirement. Students
choosing a specialization in International Business or
European Studies must complete a total of 45 credits.
-
A basic
one-year undergraduate course in economics for
undergraduate credit or EC 523 (only for those who
have not already completed such a course).
-
The
intermediate level of a foreign language.
-
A final
comprehensive oral examination or, subject to the
decision of the Program Advisor, a thesis requiring a
formal oral defense in lieu of the examination.
Distance learning students may petition to take the
comprehensive exam in written form.
