In
concentration with a faculty advisor, students may
develop a major in interdepartmental studies to suit
their particular needs and interests.
Interdepartmental studies majors have the advantage of
being able to select from all courses at the SIU
campuses offering this degree. Courses selected must
relate to a major offered by SIU.
Students may develop an interdepartmental studies
major only after successfully completing the freshman
year. The supervising faculty member must be expert in
at least one of the subject areas involved in the
program of study. The faculty member and the student
prepare a tentative outline of courses to submit to
the study center Academics Committee for approval. If
the program of study is approved, it is placed in the
student's permanent file.
NOTE: Many graduate institutions require a standard
program of undergraduate study with a declared
departmental major. Students who intend to continue
their studies beyond the undergraduate level are
therefore advised to select a specific major related
to their graduate field rather than a major in
interdepartmental studies.
