U.S. universities and colleges offer flexibility in choice of courses, but more importantly there is also the option for students to move from institution to another. Completing the first two years of a degree at one institution, usually a community college, and then moving to another, is very common.
Tests
In order to study in the United States, students take standardized tests such as the TOEFL/IELTS, GMAT and others.
Cost of Living
An average student spends US$ 400 to 600 per month on his/her living expenses including off campus accommodation, travel etc. The estimation is based on shared accommodation off campus.
Part-Time Work
Students are allowed only on campus part-time work. Off campus work is not permitted for international students. However after completing 9 months completion of the program, students may apply for a one year full time work permit (OPT - details are given below)
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT is a period during which undergraduate and graduate students with F-1 status who have completed or have been pursuing their degrees for more than nine months are permitted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work for one year on a student visa without needing to acquire a work H-1B visa towards getting a practical training to complement their field of studies. F-1 students are permitted a total of 12 months towards practical training, on being certified by the advisor of the usefulness of the work towards goals of the degree, which can be distributed between Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and OPT.
On April 4, 2008, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released an interim final rule extending the period of OPT from 12 to 29 months for qualified F-1 non-immigrant students. The extension will be available to students who are employed by businesses enrolled in the E-Verify program. E-Verify is a free internet-based system operated by USCIS in partnership with the Social Security Administration which determines a new employee's eligibility to work. To be eligible for the 17-month OPT extension, a student must have received a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics degree in one of the following:
- Actuarial Science
- Computer Science Applications
- Engineering
- Engineering Technologies
- Life Sciences
- Mathematics
- Military Technologies
- Physical Sciences
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT is an employment option available to F-1 students where the practical training internship is an integral part of the curriculum or academic program. CPT is temporary employment authorization for non-immigrant students in the United States while enrolled in a college level degree program. Students are allowed to work and study from the day they join classes in a university/college. The Graduate (PG) Students have the following options under CPT:
- Work only one year full time and avail of One year full time after completion of the course.
- Work two years part time (20 hours a week) and avail of one year full time work after the course.
- Work two years full time but then you are not allowed to work after completion of the course.
H1-B Visa
The H-1B is a non-immigrant visa in the United States under the Immigration & Nationality Act, section 101(a)(15)(H). It allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations. The regulations define a “specialty occupation” as requiring theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge in a field of human endeavor[1] including, but not limited to, architecture, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences, social sciences, biotechnology, medicine and health, education, law, accounting, business specialties, theology, and the arts, and requiring the attainment of a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent as a minimum[2] (with the exception of fashion models, who must be "of distinguished merit and ability".)[3] Likewise, the foreign worker must possess at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and state licensure, if required to practice in that field. H-1B work-authorization is strictly limited to employment by the sponsoring employer.
