Since then Germany has expended considerable funds to bring eastern productivity and wages up to western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries formed a common European currency, the euro.
Despite the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, the distribution of political power among the 16 Länder has remained unchanged. According to the German Constitution, the Länder continue to share authority with the Bund
(the Federation). Within the Länder there are
three city states: Berlin (the capital), Bremen
and Hamburg. There are over 22,000 communities,
districts and cities in Germany.
