Academic requirements of the Internship

Students should have successfully completed the twelve subjects from the AH&LA diploma to be considered for entry onto the second year. They will also be required to submit a c.v. and to present themselves for interview with both the College’s Course Director and the work placement Hotel Manager (or HR department).

In order to qualify for the Advanced Diploma award, during the year students will have to meet the following academic requirements:

Tutor Visits – The college’s course director (or other appointed tutor) will visit the hotel every 12 weeks, at which the student and the hotel m ana ger (or appointed Mentor to the student) will be present. Learning objectives will be agreed (depending on the department in which the student has been placed) as will the method of measuring the student’s success (or failure) in meeting those criteria. The first such meeting will take place within the first week of the internship.

End of Semester Reports – At the end of each semester (every 15 weeks) students will be required to submit a report (by the given deadline) on the training they received during that period. It must also include a ‘reflective statement’ that includes a self-assessment/evaluation. At this time the appointed ‘Hotel Mentor’ will also submit a report to the college on the student. At the conclusion of each semester, through these reports students should also be able to demonstrate a ‘progression’ in their professional development from supervisory level to junior m ana gement level.

Project/Dissertation – One of the main academic requirements of the internship will be the completion of a major ‘work-based project’ under the supervision of the college. A suitable subject area will be selected (depending on the departmental area the student has majored in) through negotiation between the student, hotel m ana ger and the college’s course director. This will usually be negotiated at the end of the second semester with a submission date set at the completion of the work placement.

Case Study Examinations and Oral Presentation - The final and main academic requirement of the advanced diploma will take place after completion of the work placement where students will return to college for a further two months of classes. This final part of the programme will draw on the student experiences and formalise their professional capabilities at management level – addressing such issues of operations management & planning, strategic marketing & international and strategic management in hospitality organisations. Final assessment will take place via case study driven examinations and an oral presentation.

On successful completion of all of the above the student will be awarded with the Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management. In addition, the student will also receive a ‘letter of reference’ from the hotel.
