Postgraduate Diploma in Film & Video Production 

This one year postgraduate course is designed for those seeking a sound foundation in professional video production with a very substantial practical component, supported by a strong critical and contextual framework. The year is intensive, demanding and challenging. Self-discovery takes place alongside the acquisition of new skills. Students work together in small groups in a supportive and challenging environment, where individual potential is developed and life-long alliances are formed.

Content

Film and Television Studies: This unit introduces learners to theoretical approaches to understanding meaning in television and cinema.

Script Writing (Fiction): This unit will enable learners to develop drama scripts in the conventional format, it seeks to develop an awareness of some of the key aesthetic and technical conventions and issues underlying screen-based material.

Director: This unit will enable learners to develop the skills of a director in the film, television and video industry. The role of the director will be investigated by analysing a range of film, television and video productions.

Production Management: This unit will allow learners to demonstrate their understanding of production management. Learners will have to plan and manage a production using their skills in production planning, resource management and people management.

Film and Television Drama Production: This unit introduces learners to techniques associated with drama production in the field of film and television. Learners will produce a drama production in either a film or television style.

Practical Skills: This unit provides the underpinning knowledge and skill required for work in other moving image units. Learners will be introduced to a wide range of techniques and technology to enable them to record pictures and sound.

Entry requirements

Applicants will be admitted to the course on the basis of the following criteria:

  • The course is open to graduates in any discipline who are determined to succeed as media producers,

  • or mature students with work experience in the field. Evidence of commitment to (but not necessarily specific experience in) film and TV production will be required.
