CAREER & INTERNSHIPS

Intern Studies

The intern studies programme is a unique and essential part of the curriculum. Students are provided with a paid industry placement during each semester of approximately 250 hours per semester. The placement is completed as either casual or part- time work throughout the studies and during term breaks. The intern studies programme ensures students gain first-hand experience in leading hotels, resorts, restaurants and other equally suitable hospitality establishments and forms an essential part of the assessment evidence gathering process.

Qualifying Criteria - Intern Studies

Prior to commencement of the placement, all students are required to satisfy the following criteria to ensure they meet minimum industry employment standards. The criteria upon which students are assessed are:

  • Have successfully completed the first ten (10) weeks of practical skills training and achieved the required competencies in each area

  • Have a satisfactory attendance record

  • Have completed a satisfactory interview assessment with the Industry Placement Manager and Director of Hospitality Studies

  • Have successfully completed the Interpersonal Skills Training conducted in "Professional Development"

Once students have met all of the qualifying criteria, the Industry Placement Manager will arrange up to three interviews with suitably identified establishments. Actual industry placement commences after week 14 of Semester 1.

Students should not expect to work any earlier than this and should be able to support themselves throughout this time.

International students are permitted to work 20 hours per week throughout the school term, however you may work full time during the school term breaks. It is important to note that the wages you receive will generally assist you with some of your living expenses, but are not sufficient enough to cover the cost of tuition and living while studying in Australia.

What is a Traineeship?

A structured program, usually for a nominal duration of twelve months or more, which is available either on a part-time or full-time basis. A Traineeship is a valuable first step to a rewarding career with the hospitality and tourism industry – but trainees are not the only ones to benefit. By taking on trainees, employers have the opportunity to develop a well trained, versatile and multi-skilled workforce. Financial incentives and access to flexible training arrangements have been created to meet the needs of the trainee.

Traineeship Course Streams

Within the Hospitality Industry structure there are currently three streams for entry into Traineeships, these are for employees working within the housekeeping, front office/reception and food and beverage areas. However qualification streams can be created or adapted for other employees not identified in the above steams and these would be on an individual basis. A fourth stream is provided for kitchen hands looking to progress into an apprenticeship, with a Certificate II in Hospitality (Operations) being undertaken prior to the offer of an apprenticeship.

  • Food and Beverage
